the elementals different vieuws

hello beloved brothers and sisters

i want to post some stuff about the beautifull creatures called elementals

as you know we have 4 coming out of the one:

Ancient myths and theories tell us that four Divine Beings 'Spirits' were sent to the fledgling earth (then a smoldering pot of confusion being created), to bring about order out of chaos. As the rays of their celestial bodies made contact with the crystallized influences of the lower world, they became the four elements linking humankind to nature, the heavens and the Divine. Elementals are mystical creatures that dwell within the spirit realm of these elements. Elementals can be related to "nature spirits". These are the spirits that govern all nature, the forces of life that may be summoned to assist in working magick. It's important therefore to understand who they are and what they represent. Earth spirits are known as Gnomes, Air spirits as Sylphs, Fire spirits as Salamanders, and Water spirits are called Undines.Air the essence of intelligence, which liberates and stimulates.

  • The East is air. Sylphs - The spirits of air.
  • The South is fire. Salamanders- The spirits of fire.
  • The West is water. Undines- Spirits of water
  • The North is earth. Gnomes- Spirits of the earth.
  • The Center is akasha. Akasha- The element of spirit itself.

Elemental spirits are the embodiments of each individual element. Generally they are summoned during renaming rituals and initiations.Elementals range in size from smaller than an electron to vaster than galactic space. Like the angels, elemental beings begin their evolution small in size and increase their size as they evolve. The elementals serving on planet Earth materialize whatever they pick up from the thoughts and feelings of mankind. This relationship was intended to facilitate the remanifestation of "heaven on Earth."

They take their orders from the devas.

They do not remain individualized as humans are. These beings are animated by the thought power of the lower angels and so are thought forms of sorts.Sylphs are beings associated with the element of Air. Their activity is reflected in the gathering of clouds, the formation of snowflakes, and the growth and maturity of all plant life. They are the spirits of the wind, and were the source of many Greek myths and legends. Among the Elementals as a whole, Sylphs are of the highest vibration and can thus traverse the dimensions more or less at will. The Sylphs have a ruler whose name is Paralda. Though essentially creatures of the air, Sylphs reside on high mountain tops. Legend has it that they once spoke to human through caverns and were the voices of ancient oracles.Sylphs are associated with the activity of the human mind. They can influence and inspire humans; often they are said to gather around the poet or artist in order to impart their inner visions of spiritual beauty. They usually appear to humans in the classic fairy image.Sylphs are active, quick of movement and speech. They are clever and intelligent, but can be subtle in their persuasiveness. By nature, Sylphs are aloof and detached. They're called for help in creation or resolution of issues involving the intelligence and the mind, or products of intellect. If you need help with communication or writing, are looking for balance, justice or to break an addiction, then look to the Sylphs, the guardian spirit of air, for they are the elemental helper. The sylphs live hundreds of years, often reaching one thousand and never seeming to get old.The vary in size from being as large as a human to being much smaller. They are volatile and changeable. The winds are their particular vehicle. The work through the gases and ethers of the Earth and are kindly toward humans. They are usually seen with wings, looking like cherubs or fairies. Because of their connection to air, which is associated with the mental aspect, one of their functions is to help humans receive inspiration. The sylphs are drawn to those who use their minds, particularly those on creative arts.Spirits of air, the sylphs are elusive creatures, almost as hard to get to know as the gnomes, but only because we must get to know our own minds and our Will before we can even touch them.Sylphs are lonely beings who would like to be more connected to us if they could, but they live in the space between dimensions and their interactions with us are limited. We can contact them through meditation and conscious journeying, but we must keep our emotions (water energy) in check, or we will not reach them. When the sylphs finally are contacted, they can bring forth realisations and epiphanies... these beings can make the mind tingle with electricity and mental power... they can literally take you to another level and teach you much about both spiritual evolution and the evolution of the mind. (Geniuses, like Einstein, are often well connected to the air spirits.) But, as with the undines, beware that you do not become addicted - their energy can be intoxicating and like breathing in 100% pure oxygen to all those who are not balanced and strong within themselves. They can leave you paraniod, schizophrenic and insane or at least make it appear to the outside world you will appear to be so.

the oldest western source of elementals comes from paracelsus from the 16th centurie here a link:

The spirits of fire, the salamanders are wonderful elementals live in the present, for the here and now, and therefore, do not have a good memory. They inspire passion, creativity, action that must be taken now... but beware you don't let them burn you out!Invite the salamanders to spice up your love life! They thrive on and give drive to sexual energy; at this time they will happily awaken the kundalini (energy serpent) within you if you let them, starting at the base of your spine and spiralling their fire upwards. Shame of sexuality is a human trait - the spirits no nothing of this, especially not salamanders who will glow with glee if you let them feel your awakening.Fire spirits are not for everyone because of their temperemental nature, but it is no use getting stressed or annoyed with them... this is simply who they are and is the only way they know how to be (also, they would have no memory of what you are annoyed at them for!) - it is through this dynamic nature that they can teach you of patience, prudence and tolerance of others. Salamanders are beings associated with the element of Fire. It is through their activity that fire exists and can be used by humankind. Fire elementals were the first elementals to befriend humans, teaching our ancestors how to make campfires.Salamanders are ruled by king called Djin.Salamanders have a profound effect on human nature since they are linked to the activity of our bodies through which we maintain a body temperature. They tend to influence general temperament, such as when someone is "hot-blooded" or a "hothead". Salamanders often appear to humans in the shape of small, lizard-like flames.Salamanders are explosive, quick in movement, and very bright. They are also unstable, especially with respect to emotions. Fire is traditionally associated with Will, so one can expect Salamanders to be forceful and highly opinionated. They are called upon to help in matters involving the discipline and exercise of the Will and Power, including willpower, conflicts with others, war, and courage. However, due to their unstable natures, calling upon Salamanders carries its own risks as fire-based anomalies may be experienced in the general area in which they're called. The salamanders are the spirit of fire. Without these beings, fire cannot exist. You cannot light a match without a salamander's being present. There are many families of salamanders, differing in size, appearance, and dignity. Some people have seen them as small balls of light, but most commonly they are perceived as being lizard-like in shape and about a foot or more in length. The salamanders are considered the strongest and most powerful of all the elementals. Their ruler is a magnificent flaming being called Djin. Those who have seen him say that he is terrible, yet awe-inspiring in appearance. Salamanders have the ability to extend their size or diminish it, as needed. If you ever need to light a campfire in the wilderness, call to the salamanders and they will help you.It has also been said that salamanders (and the other elemental beings) can be mischievous at times. For example, a fiery temper and inharmonious conditions in a person's home can cause these beings to make trouble. They are like children in that they don't fully understand the results of their actions. They are greatly affected, as are all nature spirits, by human humankind's thinking.

Undines

Spirits of Water, the undines have the longest memory of all the elementals... water holds memory.Undines remember much of true history, and a few even remember the creation of the world. Work with undines and you work with truth, loyalty, love, bonding and connection with the All...they will teach you everything you need to know about your emotions if you let them, as well as show you things that you could only begin to imagine, about both yourself and existence itself. Open your heart to them, open your wounds to them... their strength is in their healing energies - when you cry, you tap into and release these energies yourself. It is easy to get addicted to water energy, take care not to drown.Undines are beings associated with the element of Water. In ancient lore they are recalled in the images of water nymphs and mermaids. Springs, streams, and wells are favored by Undines. Their traditional abodes were among marsh reeds and vegetation growing alongside rivers and lakes.

Undines are ruled by Necksa. They are friendly toward humans and their presence has a strong influence on our emotional well-being. The moodiness of an individual can be traced to their elemental nature (such as when we say that a person is "all washed out"). Just as water can be beautiful in a fall or river, it can also be unattractive in a stagnant pool.

The activity of Undines is responsible for the vitality within all liquids - therefore they play a vital role in plant, animal, and human life. Undines appear to human most often in full human shape, as beautiful maidens.Undines are seen as sensual and graceful in their movements, with very strong emotions. Undines are the most human and seductive of the four elemental types. They tend to be sympathetic and loving, and are most helpful in matters dealing with emotional issues, such as love and friendship, desire and lustIs it the power of telepathy, music or art you desire, look to Undines, the guardian spirit of the water to be your guardian spirit of water. The undines are the elemental beings that compose water. They are able to control, to a great degree, the course and function of the water element.

Etheric in nature, they exist within the water itself and this is why they can't be seen with the normal physical vision. These beings are beautiful to look at and are very graceful. They are often seen riding the waves of the ocean. They can also be found in rocky pools and in marshlands. They are clothed in a shimmery substance looking like water but shinning with all the colors of the sea, with green predominating. The concept of the mermaid is connected with these elemental beings. The undines also work with the plants that grow under the water and with the motion of water. Some undines inhabit waterfalls, others live in rivers and lakes. Every fountain has its nymph. Every ocean has its oceanids. The undines closely resemble humans in appearance and size, except for those inhabiting smaller streams and ponds. The undines often live in coral caves under the ocean or on the shores of lakes or banks of rivers. Smaller undines live under lily pads. The undines work with the vital essences and liquids of plants, animals, and human beings. They are present in everything containing water. There are many families of undines, as the chart indicates. The ruler of the undines is a called Necksa. The undines love, serve, and honor her unceasingly. They are emotional beings, very friendly and open to being of service to human beings. The smaller undines are often seen as winged beings that people have mistakenly called fairies. Those winged beings are seen near flowers that grow in watery areas. They have gossamer wings and gossamer clothing.

Gnomes

Spirits of the earth, the gnomes are usually small and squat in appearance as they have to tend to The Garden (this is the earth - they refer to it as The Garden). They possess a vibratory rate that makes them invisible to humans, but one that is still close enough to the lower physical vibration for them to interact with it. Their actions are reflected in the presence of mineral deposits, the erosion of rock, and the formation of crystals and other geological formations.n ancient legends the Gnomes were protectors of secret treasures concealed in vast caverns beneath the earth. The old sages taught that the Gnomes were not naturally inclined to aid humankind, but if a person won their confidence and trust they would prove to be valuable allies. However, like all elementals, it was dangerous to deceive them or misuse their aid. Elementals work through the subjective nature of men and women, and can influence the human mind. Gnomes have the capability to bring about gloom, melancholy, and despair. Conversely, Gnomes can also bestow confidence, steadfastness, and endurance.Gnomes are ruled by a king whose name is Gob. His followers came to be called Goblins as tales of them were told and retold over the centuries. They usually appear to humans as small, dwarf-like creatures.Gnomes are the most substantial of the elementals. They dwell in holes, mines, and caverns. They are the most like us in personality, with all its good and bad points, but they are especially prey to all the weaknesses in human nature. They are called upon for help with money matters, stability, and growth. If your goal is love, money, health, then earth is you element and the elemental spirit of health is the Gnome, the Spirits of the earth will be your elemental helper. These are the hardest elementals to try and work with because it takes a lot to gain their trust. In recent years, they have become angry and disheartened with the race of man and what we have done and are still doing to The Garden. But once you show yourself to be true in heart and deed, they become the best friends to have... as they have roots in the earth, so they will also have roots in your heart... one word of warning here: Becareful what you promise, because they will hold you to your word, and if they ever feel you have letthem down, you will almost never see them again - some have even been known to will you bad luck for this betrayal (this is why so many stories tell of speaking well of the "little people" or "good neighbours").The brownies who used to help us in our homes are also gnomes or earth spirits - they chose to live with us in our "boxes" in the hope that we would not lose touch with The Garden... you will find almost no brownies living with humans

After the Wiccan circle is formed and consecrated with the elements, after calling the Quarters to preside and watch over the proceedings, specific elementals whose natures best suit the work or rite being carried out may then be invited to participate. Care needs to be taken when calling the aid of elementals. Elementals are not always the helpful little creatures we'd like them to be, and can be mischievous, bad tempered little devils if allowed to get out of control. .n mysticism, magick, mythology and alchemy, an elemental is a creature (usually a spirit) that is attuned with, or composed of, one of the classical elements: air, earth, fire and water. The elements balance each other out through opposites: water quenches fire, fire boils water, earth contains air, air erodes earth. The concept of elementals seems to have been conceived by Paracelsus in the 16th century.like  i posted above.

Sylph invented by Paracelsus

Elementals are commonly mentioned in grimoires dealing with alchemy and sorcery and are usually called by summoning.

this is an earth elementals drawn and seen by my mom who can see them :http://api.ning.com/files/Jx*GOs7U0LFHjDpAInFp0Cd3WIQn8KbZTm6Q12B8xawMIKoFn0w5Vftzf*cFMpUZWG1xD7IKwdr*0DcKgu0JEg5s-aW-TvaA/greenman.jpg

Other kinds of elemental

In modern occultism the word "elemental" can also be used to mean any simple or only partly sentient spiritual entity. These entities can be entirely natural (for instance, the spirit of a group of trees) or can be created by magicians or sorcerers to perform a task for them. The latter type are called servitors. This kind of "subservient" or "man-made" elemental can be found mentioned in the works of Austin Osman Spare or Aleister Crowley. They are a vital concept in modern Chaos Magic.

Theosophy and Anthroposophy are also known to have knowledge of elementals. In Theosophy, a "Seventh Ray" occultist works with elementals. (See Seven Rays). It is believed that elementals can be observed when the third eye (etheric sight) is activated.

Another kind of elemental is called a Golem, which was an elemental in Jewish folklore. They had bodies completely made out of one kind of inanimate material (usually rocks). Golems also usually make appearances in modern RPG's.In Greek legends, the Nymphs were female nature spirits who lived in the ocean, in trees, and ponds. A nymph wouldn't mind if you drank from their spring, unless you didn't ask first. If you didn't ask, she might poison the water, or send a water snake after you.[citation needed]

To be sure, all elementals are unique and bring forth unique gifts to the cosmic table of life.  But fire elementals (also known as Salamanders) are particularly remarkable.

The key to what sets Salamanders apart from other elementals (earth, air, water) is also what causes their presence to be underestimated in our dealings with elementals.

Why? Because fire elementals represent inherent potential in all life.

True, Salamanders are in full-bodied force when their energy is ignited, and when their presence is made manifest by a frenzy of flames.

However, it is the potential that fire elementals imply that is the vessel of true power.

Everything has the capacity to either ignite or be consumed by the element of fire.  Within all creation indwells an underlying *spark* and that animating spark is an energetic kinsman to the Salamander clan.

What does this mean on a symbolic level, and how can this knowledge enhance our collective awareness?

It means a primitive, higher power indwells the soul of all life and tapping into that primal power provides a fuel so magnificent we run the risk of losing ourselves to it completely.

Why? Because fire elementals are the spokespirits for essences such as:

•    Activation
•    Creation
•    Purification
•    Sexuality
•    Assertion
•    Consumption

With these kinds of energies under their belt, Salamanders can be utterly overwhelming.  But, to the practitioner who has invested him/herself to the nature of the fire element, the rewards can be illuminating.

Salamanders are gatekeepers into intense worlds of energy and spirituality.  Indeed, they are considered guardians of wild, fiery realms by shamanic practitioners.  Also, energetic mages invoke fire elementals when conducting shape shifting practices.his makes utter sense as the nature of Salamanders is extremely changeable, not to mention unpredictable and sometimes volatile.

Ancient alchemists and mystics often debated as to the viability of the lessons taught by fire elementals.  They reasoned these energetic beings were so combustible, knowledge gained from them was as fleeting as the ashes left in
Salamanders’ wake.   Elemental experts argued only  fleeting, nomadic wisdom could be gained from Salamanders because of their flash-to-smolder nature.

I disagree.  I believe the devoted Adept and pupil can sit at the side of this energy, adding fathoms of permanent depth and knowledge from Salamander-kind.

And I still maintain the most important of these lessons is the concept of potential.

When working with Salamander energy, here are some meditation suggestions to spark enlightenment about fire elementals and their indwelling potential:

•    Work with Salamanders by acknowledging the location of their cardinal throne from the South.
•    Light a candle and/or burn incense as a way to acknowledge fire elemental energy.
•    Incorporate your lower chakras (root, sacral) when working with fire elementals.
•    Focus on your inner creativity being coaxed into ignition by your indwelling soul-flame.  That soul-flame holds hands with Salamander spirit and their union will be consummated by your creative impulses.
•    Meditate upon your inner fire, sultry and surging with warmth.  Visualize your neuro-network illumined with the gentle presence of fire elementals.
•    Feel warmth and an undercurrent of fluid power associated with the Salamander run through every orifice of your awareness.
•    Now, let that warmth spread, but before it gets too far, begin to form a mental and spiritual encampment.   Formulate stones around your spiritual fire in order to channel, focus and contain the energy.  Working with fire elementals requires mental discipline.  Left to run amok and without respecting their power can prove to be unpleasant.
•    After circling your spiritual flame with a tight focus of motive and intention, sit around your divine campfire and contemplate the indwelling potential.
–If you require purification, submit it to the fire.
–If you need more passion in your life, express this to the fire.
–If you desire more creative spontaneity, convey this to your inner fire.
•    Never fully extinguish your meditative fire.  Rather, use your focus to reduce the pyre down to a flicker, and allow the flame to smolder to ashes of its own volition.  Visualize this reduction.  See the hot coals warming you from the inside out.
•    Know this indwelling warmth is always available to you – always there to rekindle your sensuality, creativity and passion.

These are just a few tips to working with Salamanders.

Earth elementals are affiliated with the grounded energies that are forever bound to the solid nature of our planet.

Earth elementals have been dubbed gnomes by Paracelsus, an amazingly astute philosopher and a respected physician among other things.

The socialized mind tends to get a distinct image when confronted with the term “gnome.” Our conditioning through eons of heredity story- telling has morphed to such an extent; it’s natural to think of toady little dudes hunching in forests or caves when we think about what a Gnome is.

But earth elementals are known by many different names through the ages that might shift our mental view of these energies. Gnomes also answer to names like (pleural): pans, satyrs, brownies, elves, dryads, hamadryads, durdalis, elves, sylvestres and gnomides (female gnomes).

Medieval philosophers and alchemists carried on with Paracelsus’ exhaustive research on elementals and assigned cardinal directions to each of the elemental classifications. They reasoned gnomes best correspond with the North because of its characteristics of:

  • unwavering stability
  • cycles of time/regeneration
  • beckoned by the roots
  • stalwart patience

These characteristics precisely identify the mood of earth elementals. They’ve also been identified has unmoving, staunchly obstinate, brooding, stingy and cantankerous.

I’m not buying any of those labels. Unless, of course, the earth elemental has been crossed.

If the gnome has extended its trust, and that trust has been betrayed – there is no end to perceived retribution earth elementals will exact.

Some schools of thought feel the current condition of our earth’s environment is a manifestation of a grand (and very angry) coalition of earth elementals come to exact punishment on humans for betraying a sacred contract to honour the earth and its resources.

I’m not 100% sure about that either, and I don’t believe gnomes and their ilk are exacting revenge for being crossed.

So what am I sure of?

I know these beings exist, and their primary focus is honed on sustaining and expanding all facets of earth. If gnomes are their name, then bounty is their game.

In spite of slander, gnomes are quite even-tempered, kind, generous, loving and have raucous sense of humours (they love to party). In fact, if someone tells you earth elementals are dour scoundrels, then they are likely responsible for invoking its wrath.

Earth elementals do no harm unless harm is first done to them.

And even so, elementals have a wholly different way of perceiving justice. Their idea of retribution is to redouble their energies and focus upon their Source.

If crossed, earth elementals will intensify their energetic volume and release their vibrational stores out into the earth. The effects will be earth shifts on a scale so mammoth; humans are ill-equipped to conceptualize.

So, although there is truth to earth elementals restoring environmental balance on our planet – I do not think it out of retaliation for humankind breaking our oath to honour the earth. It is simply the nature of earth elementals to retreat within the warm folds of the great mother (earth) and culminate their energies in a revolutionary momentum that allows shifts of enormous magnitude.

These earth shifts will make way for expansion – which is what the earth and her elementals are all about.

Remember, gnomes (by all their names) are attuned to one and only one vibration – that of the earth. There is no confusion about their purpose, mission or direction.

This is a profound observation, because in the coming evolution of our planet, we would do well to adopt the same kind of clarity as the elemental.

More importantly, we may want to revaluate our position on environmental health.

Earth elementals are the embodiment and personification of our home. If we choose to violate our earth, we violate these living beings right along with it. And there is always a price to pay for this.

On the other hand, if we choose to honour the earth and her elementals, we maintain a lasting bond of trust and respect. We resurrect our oath to cherish our home.

This results in a new paradigm in which humankind holds hands with earth elementals in a new revolution of life.

In closing, ask yourself a few questions about your relationship with earth elementals.

  • Where is your allegiance?
  • Do you connect with the earth and her elementals as you would a close friend?
  • Is there listening, honour and love involved with your relationship to the earth and all her personifications?
  • If a gnome were to come before you in plain view, what kind of conversation would you have?

Just some food for thought. If you want to know more about elementals, and what they are, check out this article offered by Michele Knight on Elementals  the paradigm shifters.

Air elementals are the most pervasive yet transient of all the elementals.  They are everywhere all at once.

Their constant motion and presence in everything makes them perfectly poised as the information gatherers of our environment.

The term Sylph is applied to air elementals, and as with the other three clans of elementals, these airy ilk govern specific essences such as:

•    Communication
•    Thought
•    Transition
•    Dreams
Sylph wisdom comes from experiencing their omnipresence on many different levels of awareness.

How can we do that?  Surface acknowlegement can be paid by registering air elementals in our physical realm (i.e.: the wind brushing our skin).  But there are so many more experiential levels the Sylph offers for connection.

Sylphs are master communicators, and quite fond of humankind.  This makes them eager to offer their presence and insights for our seeking sensory perception.

Try this exercise to connect with air elementals:
•    Relax into a meditative state.
•    Open yourself to the cardinal direction of the East where Sylphs affiliate themselves.
•    Connect with the Sylph realm through the breath.
•    Breathe in with the intention of welcoming air elementals into every fiber of your being.
•    Breathe out with intent to communicate your inner status of tranquility and willingness.
•    Breathe in with focus upon joining your full awareness upon archaic Sylph wisdom.
•    Breathe out with focus upon tracing the essence of air as it flows out of you – realizing that following its path is impossible – it is omnipresent.

Keep breathing in and out with these and similar intentions.  In time, you will detect a distinctly “airy” feeling.  You will feel light, bright and imbued with and invisible presence that is both well-being and all-knowing personified.

Why would we want to practice this?  Why should we care about connecting with Sylphs at all?  Because connecting to air elementals is akin to connecting with everything in our environment.

Sylphs are like ancient cell phones.  They convey information instantly through the medium that is their domain – air, airwaves, vapor, gaseous and ephemeral realms.

Imagine our environment wrapped in a sentient, invisible force-field of knowledge.  Legions of Sylphs in our midst create this network of knowledge, and through them all wisdom can be accessed.

Give it a try some time.  Respectfully and lovingly meet Sylphs on their own energetic level (via the exercise suggested above, or through your own personal practices).  Unite your energy with air elementals and discover vast channels of knowledge waiting for your seeking awareness.

Elementals who hail from the realm of water are called Undines, most commonly but these liquid lovelies are also known as: sprites, water spirits, nereides, limoniades, mermaids, oreades, naiades, nymphs and potamides.

Water elementals resonate most clearly with western winds, which is fitting as Undines and westerly directions are esoterically symbolic of:

  • Depth
  • Shifting
  • Transition
  • Emotion
  • Psyche

Ancient clans often associated water elementals with the names of lakes, rivers and streams. Further, sacred wells and ponds are said to be residences of local Undines and to disturb these areas is extremely disrespectful. Conversely, honouring sacred wells with small gifts is a way of paying tribute to the indwelling Undine.

And why would we do that? Why pay homage to water elementals?

The simple answer is because their energies sustain, appease and compose every ounce of liquid in our environment. As such, it behooves us to be kind, and make friends with these elementals.

Simple acknowledgement to honour Undine presence is an investment we can all afford. Indeed, we can’t afford not to pay it because Undines are the key to our survival.

Undines are not only the embodiment, they are also the sentient layer of water. Meaning, they are the thinking aspect of liquid.

What if water could think and speak? What if raindrops sang and oceans orated?

There is no “what if” to ponder because our waters do exactly that, and the source of this conveyance comes from water elementals. And, for those humans who will listen and are aware of their existence, the Undine call is narcotic.

Undines are the tempestuous temperament of the waters of our world. Their messages undulate between “come hither” and “step away” depending upon to the pull of their elemental womb (water) and lunar influences.

If you’re under the impression that Undines are all folly, and fodder for fairy tales, think again. Water elementals are very real, and very much a part of the new paradigm shift we are experiencing in both our micro and macrocosms of existence.

These water beings are currently reorganizing themselves and formulating a new regime in much the same way modern humans are.

It’s all perfect timing too. In this age of increasing attention to environmental health, some among us will be more attuned to the song of the Undines. This kind of dialogue is going to insure the futures of our planet’s water supply – ultimately securing hope for harmony between human and nature.

Are there elements of nature that are far more powerful and real than simply the imaginings of little children?

What are these "forces" and seemingly invisible aspects of the Air, Fire, Water and Earth that make up the composite of our Physical Earth?

Enter the almost secret understanding of "Elemental Life" and the delicate and wholly connected kingdoms that are also the keys to holding a physical and spiritual balance to mankind's evolutionary platform.

Lets us pre-suppose that Mother Earth or Terra - as in terrestrial - is in fact a core of energy systems that represent a spiritual idea as well as a physical manifestation.

Could it be in this subtext that these systems of delicate energy balances we know as forces of Nature do in fact mimic and contain a regenerative seed of the spiritual nature of Earth itself and "Man" as the man-ifestation of creation?

Thus we begin to explore the existence and possibility of a realm of order that governs and controls the "climate" of being that we see here in our earthly patterns.

Certainly then, Man and Earth are one, both in Spirit and Matter, the Materialization of all that we see.

We begin to relate to or equate the functioning of the Elemental Kingdoms as interconnecting platforms, from the Fire element (Etheric) to the Earth element (Physical) and their corresponding systems of cause and effect.

Man is also the inescapable receiver and progenitor of his Spiritual and Physical actions or energies.... on Earth as it is in Heaven? Are not then, Heaven and Earth intended to be as One, not up nor down, but as within?

And what of these elemental realms?

And how does God and Nature order itself?

THE ELEMENTAL KINGDOMS

Fire, Air, Water and Earth are the four forces of Nature which also refer to Astrological laws.

Just as there are Ascended Masters and Cosmic Beings that are assigned to Earth's evolutions, there is also a realm of a Spiritual Elemental Kingdom that has its own components that serve Earth's planes.

Where The Ascended Masters and the sons and daughters of God serve together on the 2nd Kingdom of Illumination, the Elementals, along with the Elohim who are the builders of form, serve to these systems of Worlds on the 1st Kingdom of Divine Power.

These four elements also correspond to the four bodies of interpenetrating consciousness from the highest vibrating energy (fire-etheric) to the physical, Earthly body.

Invisible, seemingly to the un-alerted and quickened eye, are the Sylphs (nature spirits) that control the forces of the Air, the atmosphere and currents, and are directed by their Spiritual hierarchs, Aries and Thor.

Together Aries and Thor direct the intelligence and illumination that courses and pulses through Nature and transmit the energies of the Holy Spirit to mankind through the Air Element or Mental body.

Man can receive from Nature if he so chooses these impressions and pulsations.

The "clouds " we see can reflect the emanations in the form of Angels as Nature and the Elemental Kingdom, specifically in this case as Elementals of the Air.

Conversely, when mankind's energies are in-harmonious, there appears blight on the screen of life, manifesting as "dark clouds." Thus, elemental life is the most accurate barometer to reflect mankind's cumulative energy deposits. These manifest in nature.

Because all Nature Spirits and Elemental beings essentially mimic or mirror Mankind's expressions of his physical, thought, feeling and memory processes, we are also charged to employ these Elemental Forces in a transmutative, benevolent, and higher purposeful way.

In essence, Elemental life is intended to take its lead from Mankind, but is also compelled to magnify what Mankind is emitting or sending out.

Neptune and Luara are hierarchs of the Water Element that holds in balance the energies of Mankind's Water or "Emotional Body" -- in simple terms his feeling world or desire body.

We see in nature the tremendous portion of the Earth that is covered with water and also in the Physical body of Man which itself is mostly comprised of the Water Element.

The flow of Water in the oceans and through our beings is intended to flow Spiritually as the "river of life," containing the essence of Spiritual light meant to nourish and replenish not only the Physical body but its corresponding spiritual centers or chakras.

Because the Water element is closely related to the "emotional body," man's emotional states (his energy in motion), are impacted by the introduction of pure, as well as inharmonious thoughts, feelings and actions.

The major bodies of Water, including the Seven Seas, also are greatly affected by the cumulative absorption of man's energies thrown off. This can act as pollutants on this Water Element which is intended to be a pure stream of consciousness reflecting the higher energies cycling from the Spiritual state through Man and Nature.

Elemental life known as the Undines assist to help mankind rid the water bodies of pollutants, both of waste deposited in the seas, river and lakes, as well as the equally toxic, "Astral effluvia," deposited by man through his aggressions and human substance.

The seas are more than the greatest Universal source of food, they are the repositors of Earth's history. Below the sea lies the unconscious of Earth's evolutionary chain -- records of both the highest and lowest of humanity desiring to beget God and Universal Harmony or to erect in its place, institutions of Human accomplishment, and even opposition to the divine order of life.

Remember the phrase, "it's buried at the bottom of the sea," indicates Man's preference for secluding his untowardness in the vast abyss, yet it is not so, and his memory comes to live again as Nature cycles back to him through the out picturing of the elements, calming and of storm laden.

No wonder the work of the "undines" is vast and almost un-accomplishable if Mankind refuses to assist. For God has assigned these humble and magnificent servants to guard the precious Earth and mankind in his province.

One of the infinite ways we can assist elemental life is to invoke the Violet Flame. Through our prayers and invocations, we can ask for the burdens upon elemental life to be transmuted by the Violet Flame, securing the Sylphs of the Air, Undines of the Sea and all elemental life to help restore and hold the earthly patterns to their divine origins.

Prince Oromasis and Diana, Hierarchs of the Fire Element

The Elemental beings that serve with the Fire Element under their hierarchs are known as fiery Salamanders. Like most elemental beings, their perceptions in Nature are hardly automatic. In fact, Salamanders, because they reflect the highest vibrating body (the etheric body), are often translucent in appearance and form. When "captured" in sight they can be masters of changing form, in fact they are almost formless as they represent the aspect of fire or etherilization of form.

Do you ever see the the spiraling and ever-changing nature of fire and watch how its alluring and alternating flames can draw you into realms of perception as the mind transforms from thought to a spherical knowingness or depth? This describes how the etheric level reaches and elevates our consciousness. Sometimes, you might even notice an outline of a fiery salamander in a campfire. It can be perceived as a flash, a trail of rainbow iridescence, or a Salamander or like shape.

Like all of elemental life, The fiery Salamanders relate and appeal to the gentle Christ nature in people and the emanations of the soul patterns that have an openness and childlike quality open to receive and follow nature's gifts. The salamanders are attracted to joyous and loving energies.

Salamanders are also very vulnerable to many influences and because they have been sought out by those hoping to command their energies and manipulate them for their own deeds. We must call to Archangel Michael to free them from any imprisonment.

Because Fiery Salamanders are transmitters of the highest etheric emanations, they can help us perceive and ground the highest impressions and radiations of heavenly energies. Before the idea, before the thought is the etheralization, the impression that emanates as a pre-formation, a formless impression in the Mind of God as an expression.

Sometimes, we sense this when we seem to grasp, but not yet are able to re-call or call into form something not yet formed as an idea, not concrete in thought yet; though on another level we have a sort of spherical awareness that it already exists, because it does!

Many people often take walks in Nature to clear their minds, and often unbeknown to them, a fiery Salamander may help them coalesce into form the answer to a problem or question.

Because the etheric level functions on a much faster and vibrationally higher level, we have to escape the confines of earthly dimensions to where inspirations are seeded. It all happens in the mind, the vast divine computer of God. And while our planetary peoples evolve in dimensional levels of awareness, Elemental life can bridge or hasten our understanding and attunement.

The fiery Element is the most powerful element in purification and thus we can call on the fiery salamanders to purify our four lower bodies, helping us to transmute the substance of all densities including impure food, contaminations of our minds by drugs or indulgences in graphic images that injure and disrupt the pure seeing vision, as well as discordant feelings and memories that seem to play over and over.

Fiery Salamanders, along with Angel Devas, are intended to keep the purity of Spiritual Dimensions infused throughout Nature, resulting in plant and elemental life out picturing the layers, colorations and vibratory levels of the etheric heavenly state intended to manifest on Earth.

Unfortunately, legions of fiery salamanders working under the direction of Oromosis and Diana, are often utilized as custodians attempting to rid mankind and nature from discordant and dissonant energy interfering with the original etheric plan for earth and its inhabitants.

Again, as with all the elemental kingdom, enlightened souls must prepare to work with and include elemental life to restore our planet. Fiery salamanders are specifically qualified to assist and inspire mankind with both cause and effect to our solutions that can ressurrect our Earthly home.

Virgo and Pelleur, Hierarchs of the Earth Element

The Elemental beings of the Earth are known as Gnomes. Billions of Gnomes serve under Virgo and Pelleur to help tend to the needs of the Earth, assist the cycles of growth, and help hold a significant balance in the transmuting of earth changes.

Gnomes, because they are part of the Earth element, are associated and to be found in mountains, forests and the land masses. They can be secret gatekeepers and guides, as well as helpful coordinators both to man and the animal kindgoms. Because they are in service to the directors of the Earth element, Virgo and Peller, they also are especially self-sacrificing in that they carry a great weight of planatary karma, so that mankind can futher his higher evolutionary path

Gnomes can range in size from a few inches to several feet tall. They have a great love for the Earth and have come to help instruct mankind in developing his own flame of divine love for the planet and all beings. The Gnomes represent the flame of the holy spirit to the earth and are comforters that express beauty and caring to nature.

Gnomes can look like small, almost dwarflike beings with human similarities. They have a special opportunity to evolve from the elemental kingdom and receive the divine spark and are endowed with a three-fold flame through service.

As such, Gnomes and humanity have a mutual opportunity to assist each other's evolutionary platforms. We need Gnomes and Elemental Life to help mitigate the pressures that build up in Earth that can manifest itself as forms of catacylism. Mankind can help alleviate the burdens that Elementals and Gnomes are charged with by giving Violet Flame calls to alleviate the buildup of the mass weight the Earth holds as misquided energy.

There are also giant Elemetal beings that can actually hold even a greater balance for entire continents.

At one point in Earth's history, the Earth itself reflected emanations of great light and Cosmic rays anchored to the Earth through the Hierarch's of the Earth Element, Virgo and Pelleur. These Cosmic Beings helped the Earth body during the first three Golden Ages where the Earth itself was filled with crystalline and rainbow-hued manifestations. It truly was a platform that reflected the Spiritual essences throughout the habitat of the Earthly form. It was in this harmony that Earth and Nature mirrored mankind's adherence and integration of his connection to divine source.

Eventually, and as a result of Mankind's descent into duality and separation of his Godly estate and realms, the Earth itself begins to outpicture the form and density we now see.

Certainly, now there is the great opportunity and promise of Universal Alchemy that can exist and come to pass as Mankind merges forward movements with the awareness and rightful love for Elemental life. These realms of awarenesses of the entire retinue of Elemental life, beings that serve in those kingdoms and their hierarchs are part of the magnificent destiny that can be fulfilled in realizing cooperation and stewardship, who along with mankind, have this charge to bring a Golden Age returned to Earth.

Send the Violet Flame to help all Elemental life, Sylphs, Undines, Gnomes, and fiery Salamanders achieve their divinely-inspired missions.

HELP ELEMENTAL LIFE! HELP THE EARTH!
Use the Following Invocation at least once a day, go for a walk in Nature and thank Elemental life for their role. Help, pray, and ask God and the Hierarchs of the Elemental Kingdoms to offer relief to the burdens the Elementals are holding to balance Earth and Mankind.

In The Name of My Mighty I AM Presence, I go Forth to heal Millions of Elementals in The Earth!

Beloved Mighty IAM Presence, in the name of my Holy Christ Self and by the Love, Wisdom and Power of my three-fold flame, I call forth by the action of transmutation.

By the fire of my being, multiplied by the Violet Flame, multiplied by the fire of the Great Central Sun and the Great Central Sun Magnet, I call forth this action on behalf of all Elemental Life, including my body elemental and the body elementals of all souls evolving on planet earth.

I call for that portion of the flame I invoke and all that IAM to go forth now to heal millions upon millions of elementals in the earth! This is a decree in the name of my own Christhood, in the name of my own becoming the Ascended Master who I shall be and who I am already, for the seed is within itself and the seed of my Mighty IAM Presence is with me in my heart! And therefore I dedicate those percentages allowed me by the Lords of Karma of the Fire of my lifestream to the liberation of Elemental life.

This I do in the name of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Spirit and of the Universal Divine Mother. And I accept it done this hour in full power by the blessings of the Lords of Karma, Amen.

Conversations with Pan

Originally entitled "The Nature Spirits", the following is an extract from "The Findorn Garden; Findhorn Press; 1988; pp 100-125 and as published in 'From The Kingdom Within - A Guide to the Spiritual Work of the Findhorn Community.' Edited and compiled by Alex Walker, Findhorn Press, 1994, ISBN 0 905249 99 2. , p. 82 - 102

Some people, possibly more than we realise, talk to the plants in their gardens and houses. Since nobody likes to be made to feel foolish, care is taken not to be caught in the act, and silent rather than voiced speech is used. Is it foolish to talk to plants? They do not move about like animals, and they are inarticulate; but they are alive and, in fact, have a kind of consciousness. People who are sensitive know this and are careful and considerate in the way they handle them.

It is essential to understand the true nature of the plants one cultivates in order to look after and handle them properly. (The word 'plant' is used here to include all members of the vegetable kingdom; trees, bushes, flowers, fruits, vegetables and so on.) That plants are sensitive is now becoming a well-known fact. For some years a considerable amount of scientific research has been devoted to demonstrating the reality of this sensitivity. Probably one of the first to study the subject was the remarkable Indian physicist Sir Jagadis Chandra Bose, who did his work in the early part of this century. For example, he believed that plants suffer severe shock in being transplanted, which delays their establishment in a new place and sets back growth. So before transplanting, he anaesthetised a plant by covering it with a glass bell jar into which he introduced chloroform vapour. Plants treated in this way took at once to their new environment, thus proving his point. The recent book of Cleve Backster and Marcel Vogel in the USA has demonstrated that plants are sensitive even to human thoughts.

Since the actual facts of these and other investigations now taking place throughout the world are well covered in other publications, there is no need to describe the specifics here. It is what these experiments imply that is vital to us. This does not mean that people with gardens ought, for example, to give trees a shot of anaesthetic before a branch is cut off or that flowers should be ofiered a whiff of nitrous oxide before being picked. It does mean that plants should be treated with care and consideration and, indeed, with appreciation for the service they give to man.

However, the true nature of plants cannot be described by scientific data only. My experience with the elemental kingdom has demonstrated that to me. But it was only after the research on plant sensitivity was published, opening up a deeper understanding of nature, that I became willing to speak publicly about the experiences I have had with the nature spirits, the elementals.

Their realm is intangible and non-material, and cannot be appreciated by the five physical senses, except in a condition of heightened awareness. The existence of the elemental kingdom, cannot be proved to the satisfaction of the scientist, nor can the reactions of its inhabitants be demonstrated in the laboratory. Yet to one perceiving with the higher senses, it is as real as any of the more material kingdoms.

When we see the leaves change colour in Autumn, we might wonder how this is brought about. The botanist has one explanation, based on observation and analysis. The elemental kingdom has another, atrributing the work to energy forms known as fairies and elves. Both are right. It all depends on the way you look at it.

What is meant by the elemental kingdom? Ancient and mediaeval philosophers believed that all matter was made of differing combinations of what they call the four 'elements' earth, air, fire and water. They also believed that these elements were inhabited by beings or entities known as 'elementals'. While earth, air, fire and water are not elements in the present day meaning of the word, they remain useful concepts in esoteric and occult teachings, because they have a higher significance than the purely physical one. It is important to understand my interpretation of the word 'elemental', since certain schools of thought use the word to mean negative or evil entities from the lower astral plane. There are such entities which should preferably be termed 'pseudo-elementals', since the true elementals come from a higher plane and are part of the angelic hierarchy.

My own contact with such entities, in particular with earth spirits, first took place in the Royal Botanic Gardens of Edinburgh in March, 1966. These gardens, which cover a large area and contain many varieties of bushes, shrubs, flowers and trees, have for many years been one of my favourite places. In spite of being mainly a town dweller for all but ten years of my life, I have a great love for nature and, in particular, a deep sense of affinity for trees.

One beautiful afternoon I was wandering about the rock garden and other favourite spots. Eventually I began walking along a path skirting the north side of Inverleith House, which is situated on rising ground in the centre of the gardens and is now Edinburgh's Modern Art Gallery. Leaving the path I crossed an expanse of grass, dotted with trees and bushes, to a seat under a tall beech tree. When I sat down I could lean my shoulders and the back of my head against the tree. I became, in some way, identified with this tree, became aware of the movement of the sap in the trunk and even of the infinitely slow growth of the roots. There was a decided heightening of awareness and a sense of expectation. I felt completely awake and full of energy.

Suddenly I saw a ftgure dancing round a tree about twenty yards away from me - a beautiful little figure about three feet tall. I saw with astonishment that it was a faun, the Greek mythological being, half-human half-animal. He had a pointed chin and ears and two little horns on his forehead. His shaggy legs ended in cloven hooves and his skin was honey coloured. I watched him in astonishment, not believing my eyes. For a moment I wondered if perhaps he was a boy made up for a school show. Yet he could not be - something about him was decidedly not human. Was he an hallucination? There were one or two other people walking about in the gardens. I looked at them and then back at this beautiful little being. He was still there and seemed to be as solid and real as they were. I tried hard to analyse this experience and explain him away. Suddenly I was brought up sharp - what was I trying to do? Here was a strange and wonderful experience. Why should I not accept it, see what happened and analyse it later? I began to watch the little being with delight as he circled around another tree. He danced over to where I was sitting, stood looking at me for a moment and then sat crossed-legged in front of me. I looked at him. He was very real. I bent forward and said:
"Hallo."
He leapt to his feet, startled, and stared at me.
Can you see me?
"Yes."
I don't believe it. Humans can 't see us.
"Oh, yes. Some of us can.
"What am I like?
I described him as I saw him. Still looking bewildered, he began to dance around in small circles.
What am I doing?
I told him.
He stopped dancing and said, You must be seeing me.
He danced across to the seat beside me, sat down and, turning towards me, looked up and said, Why are human beings so stupid?

In some ways I may be over-personalising this being. I realise I was not seeing him with my physical sight, though when I dosed my eyes he was not there. And the communication between us was, no doubt, taking place on a mental or telepathic level by means of thought transference, probably in the form of images and symbols projected into my unconscious mind and translated into words by my consciousness. However I cannot be certain as to whether I was speaking to him mentally or aloud. (Now, when I meet such beings, I usually speak aloud.) I have to report our exchanges in the form of dialogue, since that is what I hear in my head. I am aware that in a case like this there is always the possibility of coloration from my own mind. However, applying my training as a scientist in objective observation and analysis, I do try to report experiments and experiences as accurately as possible.

To return to this question of why human beings are so stupid, I asked him "In what way stupid?" In many ways. What were the strange skins or coverings they had, some of which could be taken off! Why did they not go about in the natural state as he did. I told him the skins were called clothes and that we wore them for protection and for warmth and because it was not considered right to be without them. This latter he could not understand, so I did not pursue the subject. We talked about houses, and motor cars which seemed to him to be boxes on wheels in which human beings dashed about, sometimes bumping into each other. Was it a game? he wanted to know.

He told me he lived in the gardens. This is a partial truth, as he is an inhabitant of another plane as well. His work was to help the growth of trees. He also told me that many of the nature spirits have lost interest in the human race, since they have been made to feel that they are neither believed in or wanted.

If you humans think you can get along without us, just try!

"Some of us do believe in you and want your help. I do, for one." The wonderful thing about this meeting was the sense of companionship. I felt an amazing harmony with this wonderful little being sitting beside me. A communication was taking place between us that did not need to be put in words. We sat for some time without speaking. Eventually I rose and said I must return home.

Call me when you return here and I will come to you.
He told me his name was Kurmos. I asked him if he could visit me. Yes, if you invite me.
"I do. I shall be delighted if you will come and visit me."
You do believe in me?
"Yes, of course I do."
And you like us?
"Yes, I have much affection for the nature spirits."
This was true, though he was the first one I had actually seen.
Then I'll come now.

On the way through the streets of Edinburgh to my home, I was amused to think of the sensation it might have caused had this strange, delightful little faun been as visible to the passers-by as he was to me.

We entered my flat. I have a fairly large collection of books and my two main rooms are lined with book shelves. Kurmos showed great interest. What were they and why so many? I explained to him that they contained facts, ideas, speculations and theories, accounts of past events, stories invented by the writers and so on, all of which were written down, put into print and made up into books which could be read by others. His comment was:
Why? You can get all the knowledge you want by simply wanting it.
I told him human beings could not do that very wonderful thing - at least not yet. We had to be content to get our facts and knowledge from other people or from books. Again we sat for some time in silence and contented harmony. Then he got up; it was time for him to retum to the gardens. The door of the room was open, and he walked into the hall. I followed him and, probably because he looked so solid and real, I opened the door onto the landing. He passed me and ran lightly down the stairs. As he reached the bottom step, he faded out.

This was an astonishing experience, one I am certain I could not have imagined. My imagination works on the prosaic and practical levels and is not inclined to fantasy. And why a faun? That puzzled me. I had read no Greek mythology for years. The next time I went to the gardens I called to see him, as he had told me to do, and he was immediately by my side. Again we sat together in silence. Though I knew here was infinite, mature wisdom combined with the naivety of a child, I did not want to ask him questions; the wonderful harmony and companionship were enough. I intuitively felt that what was right for me to know regarding him would be given at the appropriate time.

I did not know then that these meetings with Kurmos were leading me to something even more unusual which was to take place over a month later, at the end of April. One evening I had been visiting friends who lived on the south side of Edinburgh. It was eleven o'clock and I was walking home.

Few people were about, and I thought how peaceful the city was at that moment. I walked down Princes Street, Edinburgh's main thoroughfare. As I tumed the corner onto the street which runs alongside the National Gallery, I stepped into an extraordinary 'atmosphere'. I had never before encountered anything quite like it. While it is difficult to describe, I might say it was as if I had no clothes on and was walking through a medium denser than air but not as dense as water. I could feel it against my body. It produced a sensation of warmth and tingling like a mixture of pins and needles and an electric shock. This was accompanied by a heightened awareness and the same feeling of expectation I had had in the Gardens before meeting Kurmos.

Then I realised that I was not alone. A figure - taller than myself - was walking beside me. It was a faun, radiating a tremendous power. I glanced at him. Surely this was not my little faun grown up suddenly? We walked on. He turned and looked at me.

Well, aren't you afraid of me?
"No."
Why not? All human beings are afraid of me.
"I feel no evil in your presence. I see no reason why you should want to harm me. I do not feel afraid."
Do you know, who I am?
I did at that moment. "You are the great god Pan."
Then you ought to be afraid. Your word 'panic' comes from the fear my presence causes.
"Not always. I am not afraid."

Can you give me a reason?
"It may be because of my affinity with your subjects, the earth spirits and woodland creatures."
You believe in my subjects?
"Yes."
Do you love my subjects?
"Yes, I do."
In that case, do you love me?
"Why not"
Do you love me?

"Yes." He looked at me with a strange smile and a glint in his eyes. He had deep, mysterious brown eyes. You know, of course, that I'm the devil? You have just said you love the devil.
"No, you are not the devil. You are the god of the woodlands and the countryside. There is no evil in you. You are Pan."
Did the early Christian church not take me as a model for the devil? Look at my cloven hooves, my shaggy legs and the horns on my forehead.

"The church turned all pagan gods and spirits into devils, fiends and imps."
Was the church wrong then?
"The church did it with the best intentions from its own point of view. But it was wrong. The ancient gods are not necessarily devils." We crossed Princes Street and turned a comer. He turned to me: What do I smell like?
Since he had joined me I had been aware of a wonderful scent of pine woods, of damp leaves, of newly turned earth and of woodland flowers. I told him.
Don't I smell rank like a goat?
'No, you don't. There is a faint, musk-like smell, like the fur of a healthy cat. It is pleasant - almost like incense. Are you still claiming to be the devil?"
I have to find out what you think of me.
It's important.
"Why?"
For a reason.
"Won't you tell me what it is?"
Not now. It will become apparent in time.
We walked on. Pan was walking very close beside me.
You don't mind me walking beside you?
"Not in the least." He put his arm around my shoulder. I felt the actual physical contact.
You don't mind if I touch you?
"No."
You really feel no repulsion or fear?
"None."
Excellent.

I could not think why he was making this determined effort to produce a sign of fear. I am not claiming to be a brave man; there are many things that would scare me out of my life. But, for some reason or other, I felt no fear of this being. Awe, because of his power, but not fear - only love. I asked him where his pan pipes were. He smiled at the question:
I do have them, you know.
And there he was, holding them between his hands. He began to play a curious melody. I had heard it in woods before and I have often heard it since, but it is so elusive that so far I have been unable to remember it afterwards.

When we reached the downstairs main door of the house where I live, he disappeared. I had a strong feeling, however, that he was still with me when I went in. I had no idea why this strange encounter had happened, or why this being had chosen to show himself to me. It looked as if the meeting with the little faun in the Botanic Gardens had been a preliminary step in bringing it about, and I was feeling reasonably certain that neither of these beings was imaginary. I wondered what was going to happen next. As a child I had passionately believed in fairies and loved both the Greek myths and their Norse equivalents, whose gods were very real to me. The Pan I knew was the wonderful and beautiful being in the chapter 'The Piper at the Gates of Dawn' in Kenneth Grahame's "The Wind in the Willous. Over a period of time these feelings were suppressed by school life and replaced by an irrepressible curiosity to find out how and why things worked, eventually becoming almost an obsessional interest in physics and chemistry.

By the time I reached my early thirties, the chronic heart ailment which had prevented me from ever having a steady job had come to a critical point, and I was strongly advised to retire to an atmosphere of complete quiet. For ten years I lived in comparative isolation in the country, pursuing my interests in science and literature, and developing a close contact with nature. Despite my interest in esoteric and occult subjects, I was unaware of the existence of such beings as nature spirits the entire time I lived there. I would certainly have dismissedbelief in the real existence of fairies, gnomes and elves as superstition, figments of the imagination. In fact, even after I did make contact with Pan and the world of the nature spirits, I went through a period of time when I doubted their existence, when it seemed to me that the whole thing might be a fantasy, the projection of a part of my own unconscious mind. In time I realised that the nature spirits had shown themselves to me for a specific reason.

This became clear when I met Pan again in early May, 1966 on Iona, a tiny island of the Inner Hebrides which is considered to be an ancient centre of spiritual power. Peter Caddy and I were standing in the Hermit's cell, a ring of stones which iis all that is left of the place where St Columba used to go in retreat. In front of us was a gentle grassy slope which hid from sight the Iona Abbey on the other side of the island. I became aware of a large figure lying in the ground there. I could see him through the grass. It appeared to be a monk in a brown habit with the hood pulled over the head so that the features were concealed. His feet were towards the cell. As I watched, he raised his hands and rolled back the hood. It was Pan. He rose up out of the ground and stood facing us. He smiled and said:

I am the servant of Almighty God, and I and my subjects are willing to come to the aid of mankind, in spite of the way he has treated us and abused Nature, if he affirms belief in us and asks for our help.

Here was a step towards the reconciliation of Pan and the world of the nature spirits with man. Because I had been able to respond to him without fear, Pan could communicate with me and use me as a mediator between man and nature. This does not make me important in myself - I am simply a channel for his work.

Vital to this reconciliation is the recognition of Pan's true nature. He is a great being, the god of the whole elemental kingdom as well as of the animal, vegetable and mineral kingdoms. People may feel uneasy in his presence because of the awe he inspires, but there ought to be no fear. All human beings are afraid of me, he had said at our first meeting, not as a threat but with sadness. Did the early Christian church not take me as a model for the devil? That is why Pan is feared -- because of the image projected on to him. This stigma must be lifted in order to re-establish the true link between man and nature.

Pan has said he would prefer not to be represented in any material form at all. Yet, if he must be, he insists on being accepted, in our culture, as the Greek myth depicts him, halfhuman half-animal. There is a fitness about it in its symbolism. The human upper half represents intellect, united with a powerful, mysterious, deep energy represented by the animal lower half an energy not yet revealed in man. It is important to consider Pan and the nature spirits in their own right when they take on these human-like forms and not compare them with our own perception of human beauty. Some people assume that Pan must be ugly. This is far from the case. In his own right he is one of the most beautiful beings I have ever seen. Oly the horns on the forehead, the cloven hooves and the fine silky hair on the legs suggest the animal part. The legs are human, not animal.

It is very important to realise that though Pan can appear in such a form, he is not a being restricted to one place. The word Pan' means 'all','everywhere'. Pan is a universal energy, a cosmic energy, which is constantly found throughout the whole of nature. He could appear personified in many different places at the same time and should never be thought of as restricted to a corner of the garden or sitting on a hilltop beside a gorse bush.

It may be helpful to consider why Pan and the nature spirits assume such forms. Their primary state is what may be termed a 'light body'. It is a whirl or vortex of energy in constant motion. Nebulous like a fine mist, ir glows with coloured light, somerimes one single colour, sometimes two or more which do not mix but remain separate like the colours of a rainbow. It frequently changes colour and is often covered with a multitude of fine curved lines. They appear to flow like liquid in a pipe, forming continually changing patterns of incredible beauty. These light bodies differ from each other in size and brilliancy, varying from pastel shades to strong, bright colours. All are beauriful, pure and luminous, glowing with inner radiance. They may be regarded as whirls of energy, but energy with intelligence. It is possible to see and to communicate with these light bodies.

However, the elementals or nature spirits cannot carry out their work with plants in these pure bodies. In this work they use the energies channelled to them by the devas to build up an 'etheric body' or 'etheric counterpart' for each plant, according to its archetypal pattern. The plant grows and develops within this counterpart. In order to fulfil their task, the nature spirits too must take on an etheric body.

In esoteric knowledge, the etheric plane is made up of a fine energy substance from which is created the mould for every form we see manifest on the physical plane. Each material form has an etheric counterpart. That such a thing exists at all will be questioned by many people. At the moment it cannot be scientifically proven, though no doubt this will be possible in the future.

We do know ourselves to be far more than just our physical bodies. According to esoterics, we have an etheric body, as well as other higher bodies. We are incarnate spirit. So, too, do plants have at least etheric bodies, if not higher ones as well. This is why man must be careful when he interferes with - the natural growth of plants. In trying to alter the form through artificial means, often using force, man can depart from the archetypal design. Apart from the fear and pain produced in the plant, this can bring about lack of alignment with the esoteric counterpart, causing further discomfort and distress. Rather than using force to bring about changes in plants, it would be much better if man would ask the nature spirits to bring them about by modifying the etheric counterpart. This they will do if they are convinced that the change is reasonable and a help to mankind, not simply for expediency. At the moment, they are limited in their actions by the general disbelief in their power and even in their existence.

What of the etheric bodies of the nature spirits themselves? In his myths, legends and fairy tales, man has depicted a vast gallery of what he has referred to as supernatural beings. (Actually 'paraphysical' would be a more accurate word to describe them.) To what extent the etheric forms of these beings were the product of man's own creative imagination or the result of inspiration from an outside source is difficult to determine. Suffice it to say there exists what one might call a vast reservoir of 'thought forms' produced by the existence and persistence of these tales. Often thought about and talked about, these forms have been preserved both orally and in print. Thus, an elemental entity wishing to assume a body can 'put on' any of these thought forms and appear personified as that particular being - Greek or Norse god, elf, gnome, faun, fairy and so on. In myths and legends these paraphysical beings have been depicted in a human form and as behaving in a human manner. Of course, they are essentially formless and only adopt a form and its characteristic behaviour when needed.

In September of 1966, I had an encounter with Pan that was to bring me a deeper understanding of his form and nature. I had attended a weekend course conducted by Sir George Trevelyan at Attingham Park. Before leaving on Monday moming, I was prompted to go to an area known as the mile walk on Attingham's extensive and beautiful grounds. I followed the path until I came to the Rhododendron Walk which is considered by some to be a place of great spiritual power. At its entrance is a huge cedar tree with a bench beneath it. I sat there for some time, enioying the beauty of the place, then rose and entered the walk. As I did so, I felt a great build-up of power and a vast increase in awareness. Colours and forms became more significant. I was aware of every single leaf on the bushes and trees, of every blade of grass on the path standing out with startling clarity. It was as if physical reality had become much more real than it normally is and the three-dimensional effect we are used to had become even more solid.

This kind of experience is impossible to describe in words. I had the impression of complete reality, and all that lies within and beyond it felt immediately imminent. There was an acute feeling of being one with nature in a complete way, as well as being one with the divine, which produced great exultation, and a deep sense of awe and wonder.

I became aware of Pan walking by my side and of a strong bond berween us. He stepped behind me and then walked into me so that we became one, and I saw the surroundings through his eyes. At the same time, part of me - the recording, observing part - stood aside. The experience was not a form of possession but of identification, a kind of integration. The moment he stepped into me the woods became alive with myriad beings - elementals, nymphs, dtyads, fauns, elves, gnomes, fairies and so on, far too numerous to catalogue. They varied in size from tiny little beings a fraction of an inch in height - like the ones I saw swarming about on a clump of toadstools - to beautiful elfin creatures, three or four feet tall. Some of them danced around me in a ring; all were welcoming and full of rejoicing. The nature spirits love and delight in the work they do and express this in movement. I felt as if I were outside time and space. Everything was happening in the now. It is impossible to give more than a faint impression of the actuality of this experience, but I would stress the exultation and feeling of joy and delight. Yet, there was an underlying peace, contentment and a sense of spiritual presence.

I found myself in a clearing at the end of this part of the Rhododendron Walk, where there is a great oak tree. I tumed and walked back the way I had come. I now had pan pipes in my hands and was aware of shaggy legs and cloven hooves. I began to dance down the path, playing on the pipes - the melody I had heard Pan play. The numerous birds responded, their songs making an exquisite counterpoint to the music of the pipes. All the nature beings were alive, many dancing as they worked. When I had almost reached the spot where the experience had strted, the heightened awareness began to fade and Pan withdrew, leaving me once more my ordinary self. I stopped dancing and walked on. The pan pipes had gone.

The change from this strange ecstatic experience to the normal reality of everyday life was not a disappointment. What I had experienced was still there; it is always there, for it is part of the true reality. Because of our dulled senses and our habit of going through life wearing materialistic blinkers in a condition verging on sleepwalking, we are unaware of the fantastic beauty of the life around us. Of course, it would not do if we were aware of it all the time; that would be too overwhelming and make us incapable of performing our daily tasks. However, we could well be more aware of our surroundings without carrying it that far.

Approaching the end of the path and the cedar tree, I began to walk sedately, which was just as well since a boy was sitting on the seat nearby. It might have been disconcerting for at least one of us if I had come dancing down the path playing invisible pipes at my age.

Several weeks later I again had this experience of becoming one with Pan. It happened in St Annes-on-Sea where I had gone with several friends who were attending a conference. I was walking alone in the garden across from the meeting place when I became aware of Pan standing beside me. As before, he stepped into me. This 'compound being', as it might be called, summoned the nature spirits together to help in what was to take place. The pond and all the bushes and trees became immediately alive with beings of many different kinds. I - or should I say 'we' - walked onto a raised patt of the gardens from which it was possible to look across to the house where the meeting was taking place. Pan within me called upon the green ray of the nature forces to rise up through the house. Slowly this light rose until it emerged from the roof. After some time, Pan withdrew.

I left the garden and about five minutes later met Peter Caddy who had just come from the house. He startled me by saying that Pan had been in the room and communicated with a certain woman present there who was a sensitive and that, of the fifteen others present in the room, nearly all had had visions or impressions connected with nature.

The significance of these two episodes became clearer in time. We are told to turn within, to seek God within, to seek Christ within. But this withinness is not contained in my physical body which would limit it; it is in all dimensions of space and time; it is infinite, the eternal now. We turn away from the ourside world, the material world which so many believe to be the only reality, to seek that true reality which is within and yet everywhere.

In that sense, Pan is within me, the whole universe is within me, the elemental kingdom, the angelic hierarchy, God himself is within me. This withinness is the All, the great mystery which we poor humans cannot hope to understand completely. We can only grope toward it and in some way seek to apprehend it.

I had often wondered about the process that lay behind these experiences of heightened awareness that permit a glimpse into true reality. In particular, I was interested in knowing how my ability to perceive nature spirits had come about. Certainly, to my knowledge, I hadn't asked for it. In 1972 I had an encounter with Pan that answered some of these questions. I had gone to the Botanic Gardens in the early afternoon on Midsummer's Eve, a very important day for the nature spirits. From the moment I entered the heath garden, it was alive with myriad beings. Green elves, three to four feet tall, were walking in front of me, full of joy and delight, and little gnomes were running about almost under my feet. The beautiful little faun Kurmos came towards me from among the bushes. Greeting me with joy, he danced off between the elves. I walked to the top of the heath garden towards a crtain tree of the species Zelkova Carpinifolia which has been referred to as the 'Tree of Life' by Richard St Barbe Baker. I like to greet this strange tree whenever I go to the garden. This time my attention was caught by a group of markings on the bark that were in the form of a figure about fourteen inches high. I had never noticed this effect before. This figure was distinct. It was strange and slightly sinister - a faun-like being with longish straight horns; the eyes were quite noticeable. I had been aware of the tree spirit but had never seen it before. Was this a representation of it on the bark? A mist formed between me and the tree, and I found myself looking at the entity itself, standing in front of the tree. He was about my own height, thickset and dark-skinned. His fierce eyes challenged me.

Will you touch the tree as you have always done. Aware this time that you are doing it through me?
I laid my hand on the trunk of the tee and felt the usual strong flow of energy.
You find me odd -- not what you expected. You are not repulsed?
"I am disconcerted. You are certainly not what I expected, but I love this tree, and you are the tree.
You are not evil."
I am neither good nor evil. My tree has been called the Tree of Life. I am what you make of me.
I moved away from the tree and turned around. Pan was beside me. He asked if seeing this aspect of the tree spirit had made a difference in how I felt about the tree.
"No. The energy field of the tree is unchanged." I looked at Pan inquiringly. "You said, 'this aspect of the tree spirit', meaning he has others?"
Yes, he has others. The form in which he shows himself is suited to the occasion. It has a purpose. "To test my reaction? or to disconcert me?" Pan smiled. Perhaps a bit of both.
I proceeded along a path toward an empty bench. Kurmos, who had been watching, came and sat beside me.
"This reminds me of our first meeting when you asked why human beings are so stupid." Kurmos looked up at me.
We find human behauiour amusing at times, but so often it is destructive, cruel and horrible, or so it appeas ro us. We try to understand it but it isn't easy. We know there are those who love nature, who love this garden. No doubt they would love us if they could see us. This makes us happy and we draw near to them. Some of them may even be aware of us, though they canno tsee us. Why can you see us so clearly?
"I suppose I am a privileged person, one of those chosen to link with Pan and help to renew the old contact between mankind and the nature spirits." Pan appeared at that moment standing opposite us. You were chosen because you are suited to the task. Your life has been a training and a prepartion for this. As soon as the integration between your lower self and your higher self reached a certain degree of completion you were bound to see us. Your lower self and your physical body had to be trained and conditioned for many years before this level could be reached.

Because of your makeup and the work you have to do, you see me and my subiects as if they were part of the material world. This is not your projection, it is bringing cosmic reality into manifestation when it is right to do so.

"Can you explain the mechanism?" I asked. "I am certain it is not due to heightened sensitivity of physical sight only."
It is a mixture of that plus an added higher vision brought about by the development of cosmic consciousness."
That makes sense to me. But I am unable to control it myself. For instance, I cannot wish to see a nature spirit and immediately do so, however hard I try.
It is done from our side - when it is right for you to have this heightened vision or when a particular entity wishes to become visible to you.
"How is that done?"
Imagine a theatre with a large stage. This stage is in darkness. It is thronged with people but you cannot see them because of the darkness, which symbolises your lack of sensitivity. A narrow-beam spotlight picks out one of them and he immediately becomes visible in this way. Similarly, lights could pick out a group or the whole stage could be lit. The light symbolises your heightened senses. It is a rough analogy but it may answer your question.
"It does. The lights are controlled by some being on your side, I take it?
Yes
"Therefore, I can't select the entities I am to see or when. But I am aware of and can communicate with your subjects."
Of course, you can do this at any time though you may only be able to see us on special occasions. The moment you think of an entityy ou are in immediate communication with it. You may or may not be aware of the response, according to your degree of sensitivity at the time, but it will almost certainly be there.
"Can anyone make such a contact?"
Yes, anyone can and it is important that this is understood. The one-way contact is always there, but being aware of the response usually need training or at least practice. It is very subtle and easily missed.
"There are many who would genuinely and sincerely like to share my experiences and I am frequently asked how they can set about it."
And you hedge and say, "Some day you probably will if your faith is strong enough. Don't try too hard, it will just happen at the unexpected moment." You also tell them to follow your example and live in comparative isolation in the country for tenyears, as you did yourself.
"I do, and most of them look aghast and say they could not possibly do that; they haven't the time and it might mean giving up too much."

There is always time for the important things. Communicating wirh my subjects is not a garden game for the odd haIf hour when there is nothing else to do. I have observed far too much of this contemptuous superior attitude of man towards my subjects; it is almost worse than disbelief. Leave it at that and let's return to the genuine peopre who are legitimately curious about my world and would dearly love to see us. There is nothing wrong with that except that it rearely works - they try too hard.

Perhaps this is fortunate as they do not realise how dangerous it might be if their desire was granted too soon before either their bodies or their minds had been prepared and conditioned for the experience and the right degree of cosmic conscioumess had been reached.

Many people who believe in the nature spirits and love them can be aware of them, can communicate and sometimes even see them in brief glimpses. With such people they will always cooperate when invoked, which simply means asking for help. This simple awareness is open to anyone who sees it. It is this total link that must be initiated from outside when it is required.

Certainly a reconciliation between man and the nature spirits is now required for the survival of the world. For this reason Pan had to initiate a direct contact. As I see it, the main reason for my communication with the elementals was the contribution it made to the work of the Findhorn garden. By bringing onto a conscious level the links already existing there with nature spirits, I could receive guidance and knowledge complementary to Dorothy's link with the devic world. Thus, the aim of the Findhorn garden of full cooperation among the three kingdoms - the devas, the nature spirits and man Ð could be established and built up.

It is vital for the Future of mankind that belief in the nature spirits and their god Pan is re-established and that they are seen in their true light. In spite of the outrages man has commined against nature, these beings are only too pleased to help him if he will seek and ask for their cooperation.

Once Pan had told me that, although I had been chosen by him, I had actually started the contact myself. I was immensely curious to know what he meant. In the autumn of 1974, I believe I found out.

Some years ago, on the grounds of a large estate near the little seaside town of Rosemarkie in north Scotland, there existed a charming place known as the Fairy Glen. In 1303 when I was approaching my fourth birthday, my parents brought me there. I have vivid memories of a waterfall with two streams of water, a flight of earthen steps, a bridge over a stream and, above all, a wishing well witb a pebbly bottom under an overhanging rock. In 1974 I had gone back with a friend to visit this place. We found the wishing well completely filled in, but the waterfall, splashing down into a rocky pool, was still there. It was a lovely day, and we sat looking at the falling water and enioying the feel of the place. Suddenly three little gnomes appeared on a flat rock in front of me.

My, you have grown up, said one of them.
"What do you mean?"
We remember a little boy coming here long ago in your time, piped in the second gnome.
It was you and aren't you glad your wish was granted? asked the third.
"What wish?"
Don't you remember dropping a penny in the wishing well and wishing you could see fairies and talk with them? the first gnome asked.
And bubbles rose from the pebbles on the bottom of the well, which mean tthat your wish would be granted, added the second.
I certainly did drop pennies in the well and make wishes. I cannot say I remember that specific one, but it is very likely true, for I believed in fairies then as I do once more today. So that could be how it all began and why it happened to me. To anyone who may have expressed a wish to see and talk to nature spirits, whether or not you have dropped a penny in a wishing well, remember it took 63 years for my wish to be granted, and don't lose hope. The nature spirits must be believed in with complete sincerity and faith. They must be appreciated and given thanks and love for the work they do. Let us try in our own ways to make friends with these wonderful beings and ask their help in making Earth a beautiful and perfect place.

A deva in the metaphysics refers to any of the spiritual forces or beings behind nature. According to Theosophists Charles Webster Leadbeater and Alice A. Bailey, devas represent a separate evolution to that of humanity. The concept of devas as nature-spirits derives from the writings of Theosophist Geoffrey Hodson. It is believed by Theosophists that there are numerous different types of devas with a population in the millions performing different functions on Earth to help the ecology function better. It is asserted they can be observed by those whose third eyes have been activated.

In addition, it is believed by Theosophists that there are millions of devas living inside the Sun, the indwelling solar deity of which Theosophists call the Solar Logos--these devas are called solar angels, or sometimes solar devas or solar spirits. Sometimes, it is believed, they visit Earth and can be observed, like other devas, by humans whose third eyes have been activated. Theosophists believe that there are also devas living inside all the other stars besides Sol; these are called stellar angels.

In the Findhorn material, the term refers to archetypal spiritual intelligences behind species, in other words the group soul of a species.

Some New Age sources use the term is used as a generic term to designate any being regarded as being composed of etheric matter--elementals, nature spirits (including the various types of nature spirits such as fairies, ondines, etc.).

The Jews call them Shedim.

The Egyptians called them Afries.

Africans named them Yowahoos.

Persians called them Devs.

Pan

Pan is considered by some as the God of the nature spirits. He is half man and half goat. The Roman Faunus, a god of Indo-European origin, was equated with Pan. However, accounts of Pan's genealogy are so varied that it must lie buried deep in mythic time. Like other nature spirits, Pan appears to be older than the Olympians.

Each element is governed by an arch angel.  Beneath them is a lord of the element that rules over the creatures that dwell in the element.  The elementals can be seen by those open to seeing them, they can be helpful or mischievous.  So you are reminded to take care, respect and honour the elemental kingdoms.
